Qualcomm Announces CSM6800 and MSM6800 End-to-End Solution for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A
SAN DIEGO — September 29, 2003 — Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the CSM6800™ Cell Site Modem™ (CSM™) and the MSM6800™ Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) chipset and system software solution for the wireless technology standard CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A. The highly integrated 6800 chipsets will provide cost-competitive solutions for both infrastructure and multimedia-enabled devices. Samples of the CSM6800 are expected to ship to customers in the fourth quarter of 2004; samples of the MSM6800 are expected to ship in the first quarter of 2005.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A supports faster data rates and higher system capacity, enabling network operators to provide an even broader range of wireless multimedia and other data services for consumers and enterprise customers.
The CSM6800, Qualcomm's second-generation 1xEV-DO Cell Site Modem solution, supports 1xEV-DO Revision A and is backwards compatible with 1xEV-DO Revision 0, allowing carriers a seamless migration. The MSM6800, the Company's fourth-generation system solution for 1xEV-DO-enabled devices, will support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A and GSM/GPRS, and is backwards compatible with IS-95A and B, CDMA2000 1X Revision A, and 1xEV-DO Revision 0. As with previously developed 1xEV-DO solutions, the MSM6800 chipset and system software support the advanced feature set of Qualcomm's Launchpad™ suite of technologies, encompassing advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage capabilities. The MSM6800 chipset integrates gpsOne™ functionality, to include simultaneous GPS and 1X voice, and enhancements to support assisted and standalone GPS - enabling a wide variety of location-based services and applications, including points of interest, personal navigation and friend finder.
"Qualcomm is aggressively supporting the deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solutions to address the broadest market possible for wireless data services," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "With the 6800 solution, carriers and handset manufacturers will be able to provide many multimedia devices and services at costs that appeal to a wide variety of consumer and enterprise interests."
1xEV-DO, Revision A and the MSM6800 and CSM6800 end-to-end chipset solution adds the following features to both network and handset performance:
• Provides one of the lowest cost per bit based on data optimization compared with other wireless wide area network (WAN) technologies; Optimized for packet data service: Revision A supports peak data rates of 3.1 Mbps on the forward link and up to 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link. Higher data rate reverse link and lower data latency enable rich multimedia services.
• Quality of Service (QoS): Improves the user's multimedia experience by enabling the system to manage various users and applications with different levels of priority. The system also has the ability to recognize the delay and bandwidth requirements of different data traffic and make sure that those requirements are met efficiently. Operators can then offer tiered services and multiple pricing options for applications such as video telephony and interactive network gaming.
• Eliminates need for applications microprocessors: As with the MSM6550™ chipset, the MSM6800 chipset solution provides a high-performance, low cost, low power single chip solution to reduce bill of materials and enable development of more cost-effective solutions for 1xEV-DO wireless devices. The CSM6800 single-chip solution delivers a significant chip count reduction to infrastructure equipment manufacturers for their CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A base station products, allowing significant form factor reductions while maintaining backwards compatibility with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision 0. The CSM6800 solution supports 192 forward-link and reverse-link channels and four-way receive diversity, delivering eight times the user capacity compared to the current CSM5500 solution for 1xEV-DO Revision 0. The increased user capacity allows infrastructure equipment manufacturers and network operators to cost-effectively upgrade their existing 1xEV-DO equipment to provide substantially higher network capacity improvements and equipment space savings.
Like all members of the MSM6xxx family of chipset solutions, the MSM6800 chipset features Qualcomm's radioOne™ Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture, which eliminates the need for Intermediate Frequency (IF) components. With radioOne technology, the MSM6800 chipset requires less printed-circuit-board area than previous generations and reduces time-to-market development and bill of material (BOM) costs.
The MSM6800 solution includes Qualcomm's BREW™ system. Qualcomm's BREW system provides products and services that connect the mobile marketplace value chain, which includes application developers, publishers, content providers, device manufacturers, operators and consumers. This chipset is also compatible with the Java™ runtime environment; the J2ME™ solution can be built entirely on the chipset's BREW software layer.
